Estrablin
Estrablin is a municipality of northern Isère, Rhône-Alpes region, with a population of around 3300. Residents of Estrablin are known as 'Estrablinois'. Whilst it is close to Vienne (7 km) and Lyon (30 km), Estrablin remains very attractive thanks to both the proximity of those large towns and its peaceful, green atmosphere.
Although it still has a strong rural flavour, the municipality is growing, and its borders extend as far as Pont-Evêque, with the 'le Rocher' industrial estate.
Estrablin is known for its pleasant outdoor activity centre which hosts the famous 'apple festival'. It belongs to the town thanks to the generosity of a priest who wanted to leave his castle to children. With its proximity to the Gallo-Roman town of Vienne, the district of Estrablin was soon occupied and exploited by man. There are still many traces of Roman times to be found here. Firstly, it is important to note that in Roman times Estrablin, jointly with Eyzin-Pinet, provided most of Vienne's water supply.
The antique artefacts found in this town also attest to ancient occupation. During work on the D41 road in 1837, at the place known as La Coupe, an earthenware vase was found, which contained more than 1000 Roman coins from the 3rd and 4th centuries.
The modern-day municipality of Estrablin was born of the marriage of two parishes: Estrablin and Gemens. Because it is so close to Vienne, the hamlet of Gemens experienced spectacular growth in the Middle Ages. Various industries were set up on the banks of the Gère: grain mills, hemp beaters, and paper mills.
Jean-Jacques Gabet was an important figure in Estrablin in the Middle Ages. This 'Viennois' judge, born in Châtonnay, lived in a big building in the parish of Estrablin, which has been known ever since as the 'Gabetière'.
1867 was a turning point for Estrablin, because it was separated from some of its territory to the benefit of the new municipality of Pont-Évêque, whose creation was determined by the law dated 20 July 1867.
The town's economic activity also changed between the 19th century and the 20th. Its main products remained cereals (wheat, maize, etc.) and cattle farming.
A significant demographic upturn has occurred since then. The population started to grow from 1962 onwards. Between 1962 and 1982, the population grew from 967 to 2738, which is a large increase in such a short time. The population increase was very sharp between 1975 and 1982, when the number of inhabitants grew by 103%. Recent population growth is mainly due to the fact that Estrablin is becoming a dormitory town for Vienne, and even Lyon. Today, according to INSEE figures published in 2005, Estrablin has a population of 3283.
