Municipalities of the Pays Viennois

Pont-Evêque

Created in the mid-19th century (law dated 20 July 1867 marking the independence of the municipality), Pont-Evêque includes sections which initially belonged to the municipalities of Estrablin and Septème.

Back then, the mainly blue-collar population worked in the industries sited along the Gère (ironworks, milling, textile mills).
At that time, Pont-Evêque had 1971 inhabitants.
The municipality hardly grew until the early 1970s; in the 1968 census the population was recorded as 2188.

In the mid 1970s, the industrial zones grew, and Pont-Evêque had a population explosion, in particular when two council estates were built: Les Genêts and Plan des Aures.

The municipality thus had 5636 inhabitants in 1975, and 5130 at the last census (1999.)

Today there are fifty small and medium-sized companies and industries, mainly located in the industrial estates, plus about a hundred craftsmen and merchants who contribute to this hive of activity.

The town has high-quality facilities: child care, primary schools, junior high school, leisure centre, social centre, sports facilities, etc. There is also a particular wealth of special interest clubs and associations here.
Pont-Évêque is a small industrial town which has managed to retain the charm of a country village; it is friendly and welcoming, with its green areas, parks, wetlands, and sensitive natural areas.

Pont-Évêque: a rural community with an urban side, where life is good.
