Municipalities of the Pays Viennois

 

Saint Romain en Gal is a small municipality located on the banks of the Rhône, about thirty kilometres to the south of Lyon. It has 1380 inhabitants and a surface area of 13.39 km².

It is the only municipality in Pays Viennois which is located in the Rhône department, highlighting the inter-municipal nature of this district. The municipality of Saint-Romain-en-Gal harbours many Gallo-Roman remains, and a large Gallo-Roman museum and archaeological site have been opened there.

 The site shows how a residential neighbourhood was organised in Roman times: dwellings, mosaics, and shops. The construction of the comprehensive secondary school triggered the development of the site and the full-scale digs. In 1983, the site was listed as a site of special historical interest.
