Vienne and the Pays Viennois

The Pays Viennois is an urban agglomeration with a population of 66,000. Consisting of 18 municipalities, it spans the river Rhône to the south of Lyon.

With its wide variety of hilly, multicoloured landscapes, forests and agricultural land, where the view extends over the Rhône valley and the Pilat Nature Reserve, the Pays Viennois invites you to a visit full of charm and enthusiasm.

Various historic, cultural and leisure attractions add to the interest and the tourist value of this district with its 2500 years of history.

This area occupies a special position in the Rhône-Alpes region. To the east, it opens onto the Alps and the Jura, and it benefits from the southern influences of the Drôme and the Ardèche. With the A7 motorway running through it, it is the first, unmissable step towards the southern sunshine...

Moreover, the town of Vienne enjoys a strategic position as a crossroads, with its proximity to major north/south and east/west arteries. This makes it convenient to reach from major centres such as Lyon (20 minutes), Valence (45 minutes), Saint-Etienne (45 minutes), and Grenoble (1 hour).

Vienne has held the French Ministry of Culture's "Art and History Town" seal of approval since 1990, and it shares the wealth of its heritage and quality of life with visitors.

The 'Pays Viennois'

The Urban District of Vienne was created in 1960. It was one of the first such districts in France. The purpose of this move was-and still is-to combine the energy of different entities in support of common economic projects and for the management of facilities.

The conversion of the District to an Agglomeration Community was a very quick process. Talks had already begun as soon as the Law dated 12 July 1999 was passed, but dialogue began in earnest after March 2001.

The kick-off was in September 2001 with the extension of areas of competence to satisfy the criteria of the law. The Agglomeration Community incorporated 13 municipalities from the Isère and shed two out of three municipalities in the Rhône. Each stage was sanctioned by an inter-departmental (Isère-Rhône) order, and the Pays Viennois Agglomeration Community was created on 1 January 2002. Christian Trouiller was elected to the post of Chairman on 7 January 2002, and the Community interest was defined on 7 February 2002.
